D – Day 2024 Celebrations

There were many poignant moments nationwide and in Normandy yesterday, as D-Day was commemorated.

In South Petherwin, the school read a specially commissioned poem in the morning, the bells were rung at 6.30 pm thanks to our bellringers, and there was a very well-attended beacon-lighting ceremony at the Village Hall in the evening.

Parishioners gathered for hot drinks before going outside. The sun was setting perfectly as tributes were read out to the two soldiers from our parish who died serving our country: Horace Frank Hicks (1906 – 1943) and Ronald Gordon Creber (1920-1944). Then an address was read out, before the lighting of our beacon at 9.15pm. Parishioners then placed wooden crosses with poppies in front of the beacon.

Don’t forget tomorrow Saturday 8th June

2-4pm: Cream tea in the Village Hall. All welcome. No charge.

Feel free to dress up ’40’s style! Come and have a fun time together to close our commemorations of the event.
